Paramount’s big-budget Hollywood adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s legendary manga series Ghost in the Shell has attracted attention for a lot of reasons — and they’re not all good. The manga has been adapted into several animated movies and TV shows since its 1989 debut, and they’ve all deviated from the source material a bit. But the Scarlett Johansson-led, live-action remake has earned the most attention. Mostly because someone with the name ‘Johansson’ doesn’t seem like quite the best fit for a Japanese character. With talk of Hollywood whitewashing abound, the verdict already seems to be in when it comes to the leading lady. But what about the other members of the Section 9 special ops team? Here’s how they should really look…

  1. Major was white in the original!!!!!! Asian don't have big beautiful blue eyes like Major. Many characters in anime are drawn to look white. There making a Spike(who is clearly white) from Cowboy bebop into an Asian in the Netflix show.!

  2. I had no problem with the casting. There was absolutely nothing in the anime that said that Kusanagi looked like a Japanese woman. Her face is artifical, after all.

  3. She looked just like the anime. And scar joes face matches sorry. They did an excellent job and I’ve been an ghost in the shell
Fan since I was 7 years old. She was very true to the source material and her facial structure matched far better than anyone else especially to the anime. Chin Han wasn’t a match at all. Not to
Mention they race swapped the bald guy Borma…. like completely.

  4. First 3 mins talks about scarlet whitewashing the roll, then starts the first "how it should have looked" again, saying she white washed the roll. THEN BORNA COMES UP, A WHITE CHARACTER PLAYED BY A BLACK GUY, and they mention nothing what so ever.

The movie was great, they played there rolls beautifully, your just a bunch of sensationalist a-holes. A black character can be played by a white woman and an asian character can be played by a mexican. Its not racist, YOUR racist.

  5. Everyone’s gonna complain about a white girl, but nobody will even mention the skin colour of Ishikawa played by a black dude, Borma played by a black dude, and Paz who’s been straight up replaced by a woman named Ladriya.

  6. The Major's name is an alias. The Major's body is man made and man designed by a company in the Manga and movie. It has no true ethnicity and the designers made her look more non-asian than asian. The Major in both original versions are very "round eye". Even if the Major's brain came from an asian body it only matters what she looks like currently. I think she was a fine choice but the live action was a very sad adaptation of the two originals so none of this really matters (I just saw it tonight). I was a big fan of the two original medias and was hesitant to see the live action movie. I can't wait for another 30 years to go by and I make the best remake of the live action ever! It will be as close to the original movie as possible. Even with those long drawn out staring scenes and the even longer one of the city scenes and the asian music at the start and glowing jellyfish where the Major longed for complete darkness and 40 fingers hands that type lightning fast and a big ass spider tank and…I could go on and on. From the second I saw the intro fall from the building scene, I knew this movie was in trouble.

  7. just watched for third time and i must say i respect this story variation a lot. it threw me at first as the major seemed more frustrated- kind of all too human- and some of the stuff i loved about the 95' anime – as extreme as it is theres a jobness and team in there but i think this story is more compelling. i liked 2 parts of the same govt. duking it out in the 95' where that was changed to big business no doubt supported by got. I like how they end it with the 95' beginning and old music- nice nod- i give it a B+

  8. Just found out even the Hunchback of Notre Dame is going to be black. More Hollywood Blackwashing. Course the real problem isn't the black washing, it's liberal Mental Disorder such as Looper here who won't even mention it as they don't find it to be a problem worth mentioning(Umm Equality is another word such as Racism and Sexism that the left has totally changed the definition of the word too)
